Thisprincipleshapes everything we do, whetherit’schoosing a new denim supplier for our jeans, giving our stores a fresh fit-out, or making our head office more environmentally friendly. Most of all, everything we create comes back to you: what you do, what you like and where you go. We design for the life you live. Barkers is “Made for Life”butwe’recommitted also making things better for both the future and the now.

Company Focus

Social responsibility has a key pillar of the Barkers business. Each year our senior management team identifies new projects to add to the company plan to ensure we achieve our business objective of continuous improvement in ethical, social and environmental impacts across all areas of the business. By including them in our strategic plans, progress on these initiatives are reported to and monitored by our Board Of Directors.

Sourcing strategy

Ethical design

We love natural fabrics and 96% of the materials we use are made from natural fibres like cotton, wool, and linen. As these are renewable and biodegradable, they are a far more sustainable resource than synthetics derived from petrochemicals - polyester accounts for less than 3% of our range, and almost half of this is made from recycled material.

In addition to designing a product range to meet the needs of our customers, our design team understand the importance of compliance and have built this into the product design process. This ensures that all products briefed to our factories can be reasonably produced within set costs and time-frames. It's important we don't place unrealistic expectations on factories, which when under pressure, can be passed on to the workers.

Code of conduct and auditing

Worker rights

Barkers, and specifically the Production Manager and Audit Manager use the Oxfam assessment tool to assess labour policies and practices. This is reviewed by management and used to assess risk, and review and implement policies.

The majority of Barkers garment manufacturing takes place in China. We have completed a risk assessment of the China market, and the biggest and most commonly recurring issue we encounter in our factories is excessive overtime.
